GOAD COMPANY Online: tanks equipments processes

"Goad helped us save money, time…and reputation."

Bob Stone, Purchasing Manager
EG&G Missouri Metals, St. Louis

Bob Stone was ready to sign purchase orders for equipment needed to improve and expand his company's metal etching and cleaning operation. He worked with the company's Quality Assurance and Maintenance Managers to plan the new operation. He contracted with chemical engineering consultants to develop a wastewater treatment system that would meet local, state and federal requirements. And he invited GOAD Company and others to submit quotes for the required equipment.

"We started this project because our major customer told us we would have but 20 days from receipt of material and tooling to produce good parts and get them back on their dock." said Stone. "Unfortunately, our own cleaning and etching operation was inadequate for this job, and we would have to outsource that operation. Not only would we be at the mercy of someone else and lose at least seven of those 20 days, but the cost of outside processing and transportation would have added considerably to our costs. So we decided to upgrade and expand our operation." Based upon competitive quotes, E G & G decided to purchase tanks, heaters, controls and all required equipment from GOAD. Installation was planned for completion during the company's annual Christmas shutdown.

Provided more than tanks & equipment

"GOAD provided everything on time for installation," continued Stone. "But as we started installing, we realized that we needed additional equipment to make the systems safer and more efficient. We needed to reduce our liability potential and the workers' responsibilities. That's when we began to realize that GOAD could provide more than tanks and equipment."
GOAD recommended valves with flow meters and three-stop valves for the tanks. "To prevent heaters from burning out, this equipment automatically adds water when the liquid drops below a specific level in the tank," explained Stone

EG&G/Missouri Metals operates a metal stamping and heat treatment facility that produces parts for major aircraft and other manufacturers. They etch and clean parts made from titanium, inconel, aluminium and stainless steel. The firm's principal cleaning and etching operation includes 9 tanks - 3 caustic, 3 acid, and 3 rinse. A 10th tank for cleaning aluminium is located elsewhere in the facility

Solved wastewater treatment problem

After installing the wastewater treatment system recommended by consulting engineers, E G & G realized that the system would not handle the wastes, and its operation failed to meet government specs. "We should have had the original engineers re-do the system, but our experience with them indicated that it would take too much time to have them do it," said Stone. "So once again we turned to GOAD to solve the problem. They not only took care of it quickly, but economically, as well."

GOAD designed a treatment system that included proportional metering pumps, a new mixer and a prewired panel. The system automatically adjusts pH and treats wastewater.

Saved aluminum cleaning labor costs

E G & G also wanted a new aluminum cleaning system located away from the nine-tank etching and cleaning operation. Once again, the company turned to

GOAD for recommendations and installation. "We wanted this system to reduce labor cost and cleanup time," said Stone. "We've been using it for quite a while, and it is saving us quite a bit of labor time."

GOAD also provided energy-saving timing systems for all tank heaters that reduce heat output in the evening and on weekends, then turn up the heat in time for the workday. All systems include alarms to signal problems immediately, if and when they occur.

Improved hot water rinse system

"We rinse all parts with de-ionized water. We realized that a cold water rinse was ineffective," noted Stone, "so we added a water heater. But the heater's capacity was inadequate. GOAD personnel listened to our problem and offered a solution." They recommended and constructed an insulated stainless steel tank with automatic fill devices. A booster pump was added to increase spraying efficiency. "Now we have all the hot water we need," said Stone.

Listened to needs

"GOAD personnel listened to our needs and recommended good solutions. They worked with our personnel on a day-to-day basis on all projects, providing schematics, direction and help," said Stone.

"Everything's working well. We're saving both time and money. And the governments are happy with our wastewater. But just as importantly, we're saving something that means everything in this business. We're saving reputation," concluded Stone.
